Fulfilling Potential every day: meet our new faces

10 September 2024

We’ve grown our team by 35% this summer as we enter go-to-market with our advanced technologies. Meet some of our brilliant new people and hear how they’re helping us find better solutions for our customers.

When you’re building technology from the ground up, like we are, it’s vital to have the right mix of skills, experience, can-do spirit and imagination.

Here, we share a brief chat with four of our new starters to help illuminate the amazing team we’re growing here at Potential.

Tim Beatty, senior software architect

What do you do at Potential?

Tim: I'm a senior software architect, specializing in machine learning and data based systems. I've spent the majority of my 20-year career working with technology startups.

Jen-Chun: I’m a senior computer vision specialist in the engineering department, with five years’ experience in AI model optimization and ADAS.

Adriana: I’m an operations coordinator. I work across both the operations and commercial teams, supporting the whole business.

Tom: I’m a machine learning perception intern with the engineering team, and studying Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo.

Why did you want to join Potential?

Tom: Having grown up in Fredericton, I’d heard about this local company called Potential that was applying innovative AI and computer vision technology to allow off-road vehicles to better handle challenging environments. I loved the sound of their focus on using technology to make outdoor adventures more accessible to everyone.

Jen-Chun: Developing new technologies is what excites me. Potential has the best team and the most interesting projects. I knew joining the team would mean I could work on solving crucial problems that could change the world.

Tim: I was inspired by Potential's vision to make adventuring accessible, as well as by its amazing, capable, and caring team. I'm an enthusiastic adventurer myself and joining Potential was an opportunity to combine my personal and professional passions.

Adriana: For me, it was the company’s culture. It’s the way that the company is deeply committed to remaining focused on the wellbeing of all colleagues, even while they’re pushing innovation forwards in such new and exciting ways. This is a rare combination and it really stood out to me. I’m happy to report that the daily experience matches up to my expectations!

Adriana Aragon, operations coordinator

What do you hope to achieve with Potential?

Tim: I've been a part of other technology success stories in the Atlantic Canada region and I'm optimistic that Potential could be another one of those stories in the future. The technology industry has been really good to me throughout my career and I would also love to help pay that forward by helping Potential develop into an established technology company and create the same opportunities for the next generation.

Jen-Chun: Potential is revolutionizing the automotive industry with cutting-edge AI technology, but creating unique products brings unique challenges. There’s a lot to do to bring our technology to market, and I’m looking forward to playing my part and helping the team to achieve success.

Tom: I’m gaining a better understanding of how machine learning can be adapted during the training and tuning process to perform in complicated nuanced scenarios. We’re mixing theory with practical application at Potential and that’s so valuable to me as an intern.

Adriana: I hope to help optimize our operational processes and workflows. When we’re set up to meet company goals effectively and efficiently, it makes it easier for the whole team to drive forward our amazing technical advancements.

What have you enjoyed most since joining Potential?

Adriana: How supportive and welcoming everyone is! It’s an inspiring place to work. Everyone is willing to help and share their knowledge. There are no egos here. It makes me look forward to coming to work every day.

Jen-Chun: I agree - it’s such a collaborative and enthusiastic team. I’ve already had the opportunity of leading a model optimization project that accelerated model inference for onboard devices. I presented my findings to the whole company at an all-hands meeting, and this piece of work is now informing live projects with some of our key customers.

Tom: Knowing that the work we’re doing could make off-road adventures much safer and more accessible is very fulfilling.

Tim: I love having the opportunity to learn new things and tackle new challenges every day, and we’re doing a lot of that at Potential! Doing so alongside a like-minded team makes it an even more enjoyable experience.

What sort of adventures do you get up to outside of work?

Adriana: In the summer. I enjoy going camping. Getting out into nature is both refreshing and a perfect way to unwind. In the winter, I love baking, and I make sure to pair my creations with a cup of hot chocolate!

Jen-Chun: I love working out, getting outdoors, singing, and traveling.

Tom: I'm a competitive swimmer for the University of Waterloo, so you’ll often find me in the water. I especially love it when I get the opportunity to train outdoors in the sun.

Tim: Summer is my favorite time of year. I spend a lot of my time exploring the outdoors on my motorcycle. I'm also obsessed with windsurfing, so if you're looking for me when the wind's blowing, on the lake is a good place to find me!
