Potential and CFMOTO USA launch industry-first innovation program
15 December 2023
Potential and CFMOTO USA have today announced an industry-first integration of terrain perception technology into recreational off-road vehicles to boost vehicle performance and driver experience.
This exciting partnership will first see our tech integrated into test vehicles from CFMOTO Powersports Inc (CFMOTO USA). Together, we’ll conduct extensive real-world testing at our purpose-built off-road proving ground in Fredericton, Canada, and at CFMOTO USA facilities.
CFMOTO USA is evaluating our full suite of groundbreaking technologies, including:
Terrain Intelligence, which uses forward-facing sensors (such as cameras) to understand terrain shape, surface type, obstacle height, incline gradient, and more. We use AI models to enable computation on-vehicle in real time, even on small vehicles. The data can feed an array of driver aids, information and vehicle controls, depending on our customer’s specification.
Off-Road OS, our software stack and modular control system, which uses data from Terrain Intelligence to self-select vehicle control modes in advance of changes in terrain, surface and incline. This enhances vehicle performance and efficiency even in extreme conditions.
R&D into in-cab features, exploring how AI and computer vision can assist all users.
CFMOTO is a global manufacturer of ATVs, side-by-sides and motorcycles. The company was founded in 1989 and entered the US market in 2002. Today, its products are available in more than 100 countries and through a network of more than 3,000 dealers.
CFMOTO USA has been headquartered in Plymouth, Minnesota, USA since 2007, and has over 600 dealers across the country.
Sam Poirier, CEO and co-founder at Potential, said: "Our partnership with CFMOTO USA is the perfect synergy of technological innovation and industry expertise. The integration of Potential’s technology into CFMOTO's vehicles will set new standards in the side-by-side segment. Moreover, as our first commercial program in side-by-sides, this partnership validates the incredible work done over many years by the talented team here at Potential. It’s a landmark moment for all of us."
We have been developing the technologies that underpin Terrain Intelligence and Off-Road OS since 2018. Since then, we’ve made giant leaps forward by using AI, which has enabled its technologies to ingest much larger data inputs while still computing on-vehicle, in real-time.
Over-the-air updates will allow our self-learning products to keep improving over time on all vehicles running Terrain Intelligence. This will allow learnings from the toughest off-road environments to help solve the trickiest edge-cases in on-road settings, for example.
We’ve designed our technologies to be compatible with commonly-used hardware across automotive and powersports sectors, allowing quicker, easier and cost-effective vehicle integrations.
We’re also working on similar innovation programs with global leaders in automotive, mining and defense sectors, but these remain confidential.
